As we dive headlong into 2019, I want to take a moment to look back at what we’ve accomplished this year and look forward at what’s to come. 2018 was an eventful year in the history of Building Insights. In February 2018, after 14 years as a start-up and independent company, Building Insights was acquired by Acuity Brands and became the cloud offering for one of the largest building technology companies in the industry.
The acquisition marked the start of a new phase for the company - from our origins as a startup, to a venture backed leader in the industry, to a cloud platform with the resources and reach to deliver on our ever-growing ambitions.
I am happy to say that the acquisition has enabled us to double down on our commitment to customers, to continue innovating, and to drive change in the industry. Since the acquisition we have:
- Invested heavily in our team – growing from 41 people in February 2018 to 65 today.
- Brought on Sarah Diegnan from Opower to lead Customer Success & Operations.
- Integrated the DGlux team into Building Insights to drive a new unified “edge to cloud” solution with the best of DGlux’s leading interface development solution and Building Insights cloud capabilities.
- Launched our new Building Insights Facilities offering to provide the same analytics and reporting visibility to equipment and work orders as we do to energy and sensors.
- Hosted our third Connected Buildings customer summit in downtown San Francisco with incredible case studies about how Building Insights and DGlux are being used to drive millions in savings and new revenue.
- Continued our focus on innovation to deliver a new approach to Fault Detection & Diagnostics – Building Insights Optimizations – that replaces the need for cumbersome and unwieldy FDD solutions.
- Brought in Eugene Roberov from Acuity and Cisco to lead our integrated engineering team.
- Hired Karen Becker from Dotloop/Autodesk to lead our marketing team.
- Fully internationalized our platform for global expansion.
- Continued to deliver the leading building operations analytics solution to more higher education, corporate, and commercial building owners than anyone in the industry.
It has been a busy year. 2019 looks even busier. We have significant new product plans and opportunities to marry the unique capabilities of Building Insights Cloud with DGlux, DSA, and Acuity’s Atrius solutions.
The industry is changing, too. We have seen many smaller companies acquired in a wave of consolidation and a clear trend toward bringing more dynamic software and analytics to an industry that has been historically slow to adopt new technology. What should we expect in 2019?
- The distinction between on-prem solutions and cloud analytics will go away. People want data, insight, and control where they are when they need it.
- Leading organizations will show the industry meaningful ways that better building operations impact cost, satisfaction, health, and revenues well beyond energy and resource savings.
- The walls between facilities, IT, and business operations will begin to come down as leaders see the need to have more integrated solutions.
- Fault detection will gain intelligence and will drive much more focused value.
- “Connected Buildings” will become a required ambition across retail, corporate, industrial, and education.
A lot is changing in our political and economic landscape. Some of that will no doubt impact our industry. As we come off all-time highs in property values and economic growth the importance of efficiency, productivity, and data-driven decisions will only increase.
I am looking forward to the coming year and am grateful for the partnership, contributions, guidance, and commitment each of you have made to our mission and to this industry over the years.
